Endoscopy

Endoscopic Variceal Ligation

Some patients have a condition that put them at risk of having oesophageal or gastric varices, which are swollen veins in their oesophagus or stomach. These abnormal swollen veins are formed when blood flow through the liver is restricted. These veins could bleed, causing patients to vomit blood, (possibly in large quantity), so it is important to try to reduce or shrink and obliterate them if possible. This can be done during a procedure called oesophagogastroduodenoscopy (OGD).
